Shirlow Ave.
2024
I would like to acknowledge the Bunurong people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of Country which this series pays homage to, and that I am grateful to have called home.
Shirlow Ave. recalls a place of personal sanctuary and significance through its recollection of an encounter with the ocean when my mother was living with cancer — floating in its warm waters at dusk, fully embodied in my grief. This place moves within me like a living dream, offering respite when I need it.
I was interested in how the sensory, emotional and spatial qualities of this embodied memory could translate to colour, gesture, and the paper surface. All works are oil on Arches Huile Oil paper, measuring 56cm x 76cm, and some have the addition of sand.
